HISTORY
The Woodward Opera House was built by Ebenezer Woodward in 1851. His vision was to construct a “gathering space” for the community to enjoy a variety of entertainment. Due to its popularity, an additional floor was added in 1885. Now the horseshoe balcony, the addition allowed for more seating and improved the already marvelous acoustics within the opera house.
The last Woodward performance was held in 1915, after which the building, particularly the first and second floors, were used for retail and office spaces. Sadly, the stage, balcony, and even the roof were allowed to deteriorate. Due to the dedicated efforts of the Woodard Development Corporation the structure has been restored to its previous glory. The chandeliers wallpaper, flooring, and even the paint colors are as they were in 1885. It is also listed on the National Registry of Historic Places and is listed as the oldest authentic opera house in the United States.
