Knox Idol Offers $1,000 Award

MOUNT VERNON – The 2011 Dan Emmett Music & Arts Festival announces the 6th annual Knox Idol competition.  This friendly singing contest showcases some of the leading unknown local talent, and allows the public to determine who is the top musical performer in Knox County.  Performers will sing their hearts out at a chance to win Knox Idol in one of two categories: “Youth” (ages 14 to 18) and “Young Adult (ages 19 to 29).  This year’s Young Adult first place receives a $1,000 cash prize, second place $100.  The Youth first place award is $200, and second place $50.

A preliminary round of auditions for Knox Idol hopefuls will be held on Friday, July 22, 2011 starting at 7:00 p.m. at ThePlace@TheWoodward, 111 South Main Street.  Contestants will perform a piece of their choice before a panel of qualified judges, who will select a handful of aspiring musical performers that will continue to the next round.  As a vocal competition, during the preliminary performances Knox Idol contestants will have the option of accompanying themselves or to use a recorded accompaniment.  A capella performances are discouraged for the auditions, and are prohibited in the final round.

The final competition will take place during the Dan Emmett Music & Arts Festival at 9:00 p.m. on Friday, August 12, 2011 on the First-Knox Main Stage.  Contestants will perform before a live audience, which will determine the fate of each contestant.  Ballot sets will be available for purchase for those wishing to vote for a $1 donation.  All proceeds collected during Knox Idol are donated to the Woodward Opera House restoration project.  After the first round in the final competition, contestants will be narrowed down to two per age category; each one is given a final chance to perform.  It is then up to the audience to vote one last time to select the overall winner and the runner-up for each age group.

Applications with rules and regulations for the Knox Idol competition can be found on the web at www.DanEmmettFestival.org or picked up at Festival Headquarters, 107 South Main Street, Mount Vernon.  Applications are due no later than July 22, 2011, prior to the audition.  For additional assistance, call (740) 392-3378
