Nature's Keepers Adventure Camp! (Wed. 3 Aug, 2016 9:00 am - 4:00 pm)

Nature’s Keepers day camp focuses on having fun while connecting with and learning about nature. 

This full day camp for children ages 8-11 will be held August 3-5 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. daily and will feature hikes, crafts and Kokosing River tubing. 

Registration is $70 ($60 for BFEC members) and is now OPEN! To register, download this form and return it and your payment to: BFEC, P.O. Box 508, Gambier, OH 43022. The registration deadline is July 11.

The 2016 Dan Emmett Music & Arts Festival will hold its 11th annual Knox Idol Competition! This friendly singing contest showcases some of the area’s leading vocal talent, and allows the public to determine the top musical performers in Knox County. Performers will sing their hearts out at a chance to win Knox Idol in one of two categories: Youth (ages 14 to 18) and Young Adult (ages 19 to 29). This year’s Young Adult first place receives a $1,000 cash prize, second place $100. The Youth first place award is $200, and second place $50.

Auditions will be held on Friday, August 5, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. in [email protected] (101 South Main Street) during First Friday in Downtown Mount Vernon.  The top contestants will be selected by a panel of local judges.  Last year's Knox Idol judges were Marcy Rhinehart from MVNU and Corey Strinka from Highland High School.

The Semi-Finals of the Knox Idol competition will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 11 on the First-Knox South Stage.  The Knox Idol Finals will take place at 9:00 pm on Friday, August 12 on the First-Knox Main Stage. Contestants will perform before a live audience during both rounds of the competition.  The audience will determine the fate of each contestant during each round.  Ballot sets will be available for purchase for those wishing to vote for a $1 donation. All proceeds collected during Knox Idol will be donated to the Woodward Opera House restoration project.

The United Methodist Churches in Knox County are hosting four Sunday afternoon tours.

July 10: Waterford UMC, Batemantown UMC, Salem UMC, Fredericktown UMC, Green Valley UMC and Berlin UMC.  

July 17: Gambier Epworth UMC, Hopewell UMC, Gay Street UMC, Mulberry Street UMC and South Vernon UMC.

August 7: Liberty Chapel UMC, Beulah UMC, Centerburg UMC, Lock UMC and Brandon UMC.

August 21: Jelloway UMC, Wesley Chapel UMC, Danville UMC, Amity UMC, Howard UMC, Ebenezer UMC and North Liberty UMC.

Oh My Stars – It’s the Perseids Meteor Shower (Thu. 11 Aug, 2016 12:00 am)

If the skies are clear and once the moon has set, hold onto your seat and get prepared for a fabulous show!  Call them what you will – falling stars, shooting stars or meteors, they are all one and the same.  For your comfort, please bring a bag chair, blanket and thermos of hot cocoa, if you’d like. We meet at the State Route 62 2nd parking lot.  The program begins with a hike on the Prairie Trail to reach our viewing destination.  This event is weather and conditions dependent.  If overcast skies, we’ll enjoy a walk on the trails in the wee morning hours!

Dan Emmett Antique & Classic Car Show (Sun. 14 Aug, 2016 7:30 am - 4:00 pm)

DAN EMMETT ANTIQUE & CLASSIC CAR SHOW will be held at the 2016 Dan Emmett Music & Arts Festival on Sunday, August 14, where proudly displayed vehicles sit in the midst of beautiful historic downtown Mount Vernon, Ohio. Registration is from 7:30 am – 1:00 pm on the square, the fee is $10.

Quarry Chapel Event: Sara Goslee Reed & Kerry Kean (Sun. 14 Aug, 2016 3:00 pm)

Ohio duo Sarah Goslee Reed & Kerry Kean will play & sing country, folk, Irish & fiddle tunes. Bring your family & friends to this free fun event at historic Quarry Chapel, corner of Quarry Chapel & Monroe Mills Roads outside of Gambier.

Doors open at 2:30 pm & show starts at 3. Bring a lawn chair in the event you cannot find seating in the Chapel. Parking is available in the front and rear stone parking lots. You may park head in on the grass along Monroe Mills Road. Please do not park along Quarry Chapel Road by the cemetery.

Oldtime Farming Festival (All day)

The annual Oldtime Farming Festival is always held the third weekend of September. It takes a lot of hard work and commitment from our members and community to successfully pull this festival off. We, as members, put in countless hours in preparation and anticipation of the upcoming festival. We offer FREE ADMISSION, FREE PARKING AND FREE ENTERTAINMENT.

To name a few of the activities you can experience here: A town parade kicks off the festival at 10 a.m. on Saturday, complete with a Festival Marshal, an open to the world horticulture show, antique tractors & machinery, crafts, musical entertainment, magician, old-time demonstrations, historical displays, family farm exhibit, old fashioned games & contests with prizes, square dancing tractors (a must see), an old fashioned pie auction on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. (a big hit), and an awards ceremony at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.

WHERE ELSE IN CENTRAL OHIO CAN YOU FIND SUCH A DEAL?We hold the festival in the Community Memorial Park in Centerburg, Ohio which is located just north of town at the intersection of St Rt 314 and US Rts 3/36.

Color for a Cause 5K (Sat. 20 Aug, 2016 3:30 pm)

5K Run offered by the Teen Advisory Council (TAC) of New Directions. The Domestic Abuse Shelter and Rape Crisis Center of Knox County. The purpose of this run is to create awareness in the Knox County community about healthy relationships and continued work to end domestic/intimate partner violence and sexual assault. New Directions will join the community to build safe, respectful and loving relationships. 

The TAC is a group of passionate, informed local high school students who serve as ambassadors of healthy relationships in their schools and communities.

This is a family friendly event and runners of all ages and levels are invited to attend!

This free concert series is sponsored by the Ariel Foundation and celebrates nature, the outdoors, art, science and music for all generations. Bring a picnic and a chair or blanket, listen to music you won't hear on the radio, and participate in a fun science activity provided by SPI, the Science Play-Space Initiative.

Business After Hours with PLMVKC to celebrate 100 Year Anniversary of Knox Co Chamber of Commerce with free party (Tue. 23 Aug, 2016 5:00 pm)

The Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County will host Business After Hours: "A Celebration of 100 Years of the Knox County Chamber of Commerce" on Tuesday, August 23, starting at 5:00 p.m., at 201 N. Mulberry Street.

Plans are to celebrate the history of the influence of the chamber of commerce on the film industry throughout history and will feature a continuous free showing of the newly released short film, "Uncommon Brilliance: Then and Now" featuring 200 years of business and economic history of Knox County.

The program, provided with support by the Friends of the Library, will be held outside under shade tents at the new Sugar Street parking lot at the main library.  Decorations, root beer floats, brown and purple cow ice cream floats, popcorn and refreshments will add to the vintage patriotic tone of the event. The program will also toast chamber contributors to the newly created outdoor space at the main library and its use for future library and community events.
