Best Selling Author Mary Doria Russell (Tue. 14 Jun, 2016 7:00 pm)

New York Times Best Selling Author Mary Doria Russell will present “From Curiosity to Finished Book: The Writing Process” at the Adult Summer Reading Program Book Discussion on Tuesday, June 14, 7:00 p.m., at the Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County, 201 N. Mulberry Street, Mount Vernon.

Dr. Russell has been called one of the most versatile writers in American literature and one of our greatest contemporary storytellers. Her novels are studied in literature, theology and history courses in colleges and universities, and often chosen as book club and “community read” selections. This visiting author program is in partnership with Paragraph’s Bookstore who will also host an afternoon book signing with Russell from 3:00-4:30 p.m. downtown at 229 S. Main Street.

Her first novel, The Sparrow (1996), was chosen as one of the Ten Best Books of the Year by Entertainment Weekly and won the Arthur C. Clarke Prize, the British Science Fiction  for Best Novel in 1998. The sequel, Children of God (1998), won the Friends of the Library USA Reader’s Choice Award. and was nominated for the Hugo Award, Best Novel in 1999. The San Francisco Chronicle called A Thread of Grace (2005) “hauntingly beautiful,” and the novel was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. Dreamers of the Day (2008) was nominated for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award; it is one of the few novels about the Middle East praised in both Turkey and Israel. Doc, her fictional biography of Doc Holliday, was one of the Washington Post’s Three Best Novels of 2011. Its follow-on, Epitaph, examines the way the gunfight at the O.K. Corral became central to American mythology about the Old West. The daughter of a sheriff, Dr. Russell grew up with cops and guns but also holds a Ph.D. in biological anthropology from the University of Michigan and taught anatomy at the Case Western Reserve University School of Dentistry.

Although all titles of her work will be discussed, Russell encourages book discussion participants to read Dreamers of the Day when asked which book she would recommend reading for the program.

It's got a lot of Ohio content, but it's really about the making of the modern Middle East,” she explains. “When you're finished reading that one, news from Syria, Iraq, Turkey, Lebanon and Israel can be fit into a basic understanding of how things became such a mess there. It's also a jumping off point for nonfiction about the historical characters like T.E. Lawrence, Gertrude Bell and Winston Churchill.”

Copies of her books will be available for purchase and autograph session following her presentation. Participants will be eligible to win a free book donated by Friends of the Library.

The program is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. For information, call Linette Porter-Metler, PLMVKC Community Relations, 740-392-BOOK (2665) Ext. 243, visit www.knox.net or email [email protected].
