Danville Lions Raccoon Dinner (Mon. 1 Feb, 2016 4:30 pm)

The Danville Lions Club will honor the memory of fallen Danville Police Officer Thomas Cottrell at the 2016 Raccoon Dinner.  Net proceeds from the Raccoon Dinner, as well as from the gun and 50/50 raffle, will be put into a scholarship fund for Officer Cottrell's children.

Since the beginning in 1939, the Club has truly lived up to the Lions motto "We Serve."  They have sponsored and facilitated hundreds of fundraising events and service projects to help th3e Danville area community and its citizens.  The Danville Lions Club is proud to serve and support the education of Cottrell's children by establishing this scholarship fund in his honor.

The 72nd annual Danville Lions Raccoon Dinner will be held Monday, February 1 at the St. Luke's Community Center, located immediately behind the Danville St. Luke's Catholic Church.  Dinner will be served from 4:30 - 7:30 p.m., on a first-come, first-served basis.  The Devil Land Jazz Band will perform for attendees across the street in the High School Auditorium at 6:30 p.m.  The main event will follow the band at 7:30 p.m. with a presentation by OSU football great, Bobby Carpenter.

Dinner is $11 for adults, $8 for children 12 and under.  Dinner will be served until 7:30, or until raccoon runs out.

Gund Concert Series: Dirty Dozen Brass Band (Fri. 12 Feb, 2016 8:00 pm)

The Gund Concert Series is hosting a fairly significant event in February in conjunction with the campus's celebration of Black History Month. The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, an award-winning, New Orleans-based group, will perform in Rosse Hall on February 12 at 8:00 p.m. The group blends traditional New Orleans brass band instrumentation with jazz, blues, and funk for some pretty high-energy performances.

Knox County Symphony (Sat. 13 Feb, 2016 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm)

The winter concert includes winners of the Young Musicians Competition. Supported by Psi Iota Xi, these young artists are from college: Lauren Melville, soprano; Joe Lautzenheiser, violin; Hannah Vilas, clarinet; and high school: Mary Harris, soprano; Shiloh Six, violin.

Distinguished Young Women of Ohio (Sat. 20 Feb, 2016 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm)

Final night of competition, awarding thousands of cash scholarships to 24 senior high school girls from across the State of Ohio.

2016 Distinguished Young Woman of Ohio will travel to Mobile, Alabama, in June, to compete for over $150,000 in cash scholarships.

The members of the Mount Vernon Toastmasters Club #1259 are inviting the public to join them for a special evening open house on Monday, February 22, 2016 at 7:00pm at the Ohio Eastern Star Home.  Guests will experience a Toastmaster meeting and learn more about the Toastmasters mission, its educational program, and the personal and professional benefits of being involved with the Toastmasters organization.  They will also have the opportunity to ask questions and walk through the membership application process with a club member if they so wish.

12 teams will compete in the toothpick bridge challenge!

 

​The objective of the toothpick bridge challenge is to design the most efficient, economical, functional and aesthetic bridge using only toothpicks and glue. Teams will be judged by a panel of industry experts for unique prizes. Awards include a glass-blown trophy handmade at the glass studio at The Works: Ohio Center for History, Art & Technology. Each winning team member will also receive a $1,000 scholarship to attend COTC.
 
The public is invited to watch and/or tour the manufacturing engineering technology labs in Ariel Hall. 

Hands-on engineering technology activities for children will be available and there will be 3-D printing. 

In its second year, STEMfest!® Knox represents a notable partnership among colleges. Kenyon College and Mount Vernon Nazarene University are also hosting challenges. Additional sponsors include SPI Spot and The Works: Ohio Center for History, Art & Technology with generous support from Ariel Corporation, Griffin Insurance, Siemens, Brenneman Lumber Co., Community Foundation of Mount Vernon & Knox County, First-Knox National Bank, Knox Community Hospital and Mount Vernon Rotary Foundation.​
