"Friday Night Lights" Book Discussion

Date: Monday, October 17, 2016 6:00 pm

Fall means football and the Danville Public Library will host a book discussion on the New York Times best-selling non-fiction hit, “Friday Night Lights,” by H.G. Bissinger on Monday, October  17, 6:00 p.m., at St. Luke’s Community Center.

Special guests and Danville High School alums Tom and Jeff Durbin will lead the discussion and share personal anecdotes and insight from their successful careers as players and coaches for more than 30 years with teams from high school and college football programs.

Jeff Durbin shared honors as Associated Press Ohio Coach of the Year for Division II in 1993 and is a member of the Stark County High School Football Hall of Fame. In addition to coaching Lake High School for 23 years, he also served at the University of Akron. Tom Durbin served as offensive line coach for the Washington and Jefferson College Presidents for 19 years and two national championships.

Current Danville Blue Devils Coach Ed Honabarger and his football players also plan to attend the program.

Readers can return once again to the timeless account of the Permian Panthers of Odessa--the winningest high-school football team in Texas history. Odessa is not known to be a town big on dreams, but the Panthers help keep the hopes and dreams of this small, dusty town going.

Socially and racially divided, Odessa’s fragile economy follows the treacherous boom-bust path of the oil business. In bad times, the unemployment rate barrels out of control; in good times, its murder rate skyrockets. But every Friday night from September to December, when the Permian High School Panthers play football, this West Texas town becomes a place where dreams can come true.

With frankness and compassion, Bissinger chronicles a season in the life of Odessa and shows how single-minded devotion to the team shapes the community and inspires--and sometimes shatters--the teenagers who wear the Panthers' uniforms.

The program is free and open to all ages. A copy of the book, donated by the Friends of the Library, will be given away as a door prize. Refreshments will be served.
