Historic Interest

Woodward Opera House...
This architectural gem is America's Oldest Authentic 19th Century Theater. Currently undergoing renovation, the Woodward is being explored by historians and architects working to discover how the Opera House looked in its heyday. The theater occupies the third floor of several downtown buildings, and fell out of favor when patrons gravitated toward first-floor venues. Upon the completion of the renovations, downtown will have a new location for many styles of entertainment. Tours are available during the Dan Emmett Festival in August and during the Christmas Walk. Special group tours may be arranged by calling 1-800-837-5282 or (740) 392-6102.

Daniel Decatur Emmett...
The boyhood home and gravesite of Mount Vernon's most famous musician are located within walking distance of downtown. Emmett traveled the country and to London with various minstrel groups. He is best known as the composer of "Dixie" and of such folk legends as "Old Zip Coon," "Turkey in the Straw," and "Blue Tail Fly." Additional information about his life can be found at the Knox County Historical Museum. The Dan Emmett Festival in August further honors his accomplishments. For more information, call (740) 393-5347.

Architecture...
Mount Vernon is blessed with an abundance of beautiful and well-preserved historic homes. Three historic districts are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and all are adjacent to the downtown area. The North Main/North Gay historic district features excellent examples of Greek Revival styles, as well as High Italianate and Second Empire. The East High Street district features the Greek Revival style County Courthouse, as well as many beautiful private homes, including one of the finest Queen Anne style dwellings.
